Nanotechnology: Incurred but Not Reported
Nanoscaled materials are already being used in products and manufacturing processes around the world. Therefore, the Workers' Compensation community has already assumed the risks associated with these materials. These risks cannot yet be adequately quantified and much discussion and research is currently underway. This results in the existence of claims that must be considered Incurred but Not Reported (IBNR). The community must begin to actively participate: in review of risk potentials; in data collection which will allow for the identification of nano-related injury or illness; and in evaluation of rate adequacy for industries that are early adopters of these new technologies.

IAIABC Journal Spring, 2008 Vol.45, No.1, pages 137-162. Nanotechnology, Occupational Safety and Health, and Risk
Nanotechnology promises a lot, with materials, energy, electronics, and medicine seen as primary areas of impact. It will probably deliver even more than we currently imagine.
However, it is so new and different, well beyond most people’s day-to-day understanding, that we find ourselves being appropriately concerned that its unprecedented capabilities will be risky.
This requires us to think beyond our current experience to what might be possible, and what might pose a danger.

Nanotechnology: Many Small Steps to the Future
Nanotechnology is a bit like a pun. You may have to think about it more than once before you begin to  understand it.
We have been thinking about nanotechnology for 20 years. As the results accrue, we find ourselves continuously challenged to understand the latest technology news and its implications.
