Nanotechnology promises a lot, with materials, energy, electronics, and medicine seen as primary areas of impact. It will probably deliver even more than we currently imagine. However, it is so new and different, well beyond most people’s day-to-day understanding, that we find ourselves being appropriately concerned that its unprecedented capabilities will be risky. This requires us to think beyond our current experience to what might be possible, and what might pose a danger.
