Nanotechnology: Incurred But Not Reported
written by Diane Fearn-Desrosiers and Frank Dolinar

Nanoscale materials are already being used in products and manufacturing processes around the world. Therefore, the Workers' Compensation community has already assumed the risks associated with these materials. These risks cannot yet be adequately quantified and much discussion and research is currently underway. This results in the existence of claims that must be considered Incurred but Not Reported (IBNR). The community must begin to actively participate: in review of risk potentials; in data collection which will allow for the identification of nano-related injury or illness; and in evaluation of rate adequacy for industries that are early adopters of these new technologies.

This article was written specifically for the Workers Compensation community and was published in the IAIABC Journal -- a semi-annual publication of the International Asociation of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions.
